The Google operating system, known as Chrome OS is on it's way.  It's open source, utilizes cloud computing, and boots in 7 seconds!  Google is working to get it to boot even faster!

And, you guessed it, it's based on Linux!

"Chrome OS itself is built on Linux foundations so many people could find themselves using a version of Linux without knowing it"

A Q&A with ore information can found here.

In the meantime, get Linux.

Seems great! Except when you have crappy or no internet connection, and suddenly a $300 doorstop.

Good point. And I'm sure the developers are looking at this very situation. It'll be interesting to see how it all develops.

Chrome OS has to have a google gears option to work offline somehow. If you added just one program, OpenOffice, that would be major. But then you're back to current netbook computing.

One of the best things I took from this video on launch day was http://www.flashchess3.com/ --nice!
